'Closed For Business' Part Four

Sunday 5 February 2017

Time for the closing part of our analysis of the January 2017 transfer window, and I've been given the task of reviewing the top five teams' dealings. At first I was excited, I'd be able to write about a few world class incomings or exciting prospect, all was rosy when Michael and I split up the Premier League, but now the window has closed, I've only one incoming player to talk about and that to me is an indicator of the fierce overhauls that are coming in the summer for the top teams in England, so let's start with what I can say about the team currently leading the league.

Chelsea

No incomings whatsoever for the Blue part of London, why would they ? Now as I'm writing 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League, with a right wing back who at the beginning of the season would have been lucky in most people's eyes to get a run in their domestic cup matches. This is a team who didn't need to change personnel through their campaign but change their style and that is exactly what Conte has done.
Their outgoings being one of great significance, offloading a bit part player in Oscar for a hefty tag, and biggest of our window, at £52 million. Fantastic business due to him being surplus to their requirements, the Brazilian now gets to earn more money than he can spend in any province over in the all consuming Chinese Super League. No doubt we'll see him on our screens soon, Sky Sports sniffing for the CSL rights! Another shrewd offload being that of the long serving ever present Jon Obi Mikel or as he says Mikel Obi Jon. A figure in the region of £11 million is also good business, any guesses as to what league has paid this fee for a player winding down his career ? All in all Chelsea have had a great window, not recruiting will keep the squad settled and also, keeping Diego Costa on our shores was a great move by the Chelsea hierarchy, the destination of the title hinges on his involvement. I'm looking forward to their summer activity and a player I think who'd be ideal to replace Costa if he does choose to go else where, is the Spaniard coming of age, Alvaro Morata. A very similar player, who would only flourish under Conte's style and guidance.

Tottenham

Very surprising that a team pushing for a top 4 berth hasn't added to a very slim squad, their summer transfers not being up to scratch apart from the exceptional colossus that is Victor Wanyama, even more surprising that their back up striker still hasn't scored from open play and this doesn't seem to be an issue to the Tottenham boss. I'm sure he'll have wished now that they never interfered with Sissoko's move to Everton and let him become a 'Toffee' because currently he's not up to the standard of a £30 million player.
Again, in terms of their outgoings, very minimal but this will be down to the fact the squad is compact, but selling Tom Carroll, a young man who's career has a bright path ahead of him never really grabbed at the opportunities and became nothing more than a cup player, now Swansea have taken a gamble on him and I feel it's a team that will suit his style. Spurs have done well to receive a fee on a player with 6 months remaining on his contract but other than that Tottenham have been almost lazy in this window. I'd like to see one player come into Tottenham next season and I feel he would reach his own potential and take the club to the next level of genuine title contenders, that being the raw and powerful Ross Barkley. A swap deal for Sissoko plus a little cash would see this deal over the line I think, and that's my opinion and almost a dream. Although I don't think Barkley will be a type of player to fly the comfy nest of his hometown.

Arsenal

The only incoming of the top 5 teams in The Premier League, and it's a young man from Non-league football! Cohen Bramall is a young left back that has genuinely been bought to add to their under 23 squad. This signing shows you where Arsene Wenger is going wrong, he's too occupied on finding his next young diamond, and in reality he doesn't have the time to develop any such player. With the highest season ticket prices in Europe, Arsenal fans are given a non league left back for their rewards, a lad who will not even be considered 3rd choice left back. Arsenal have money in abundance, they're one of the few teams within the Fair Play legislation that governs money spending and yet are unable to pay a £32 million fee for a Premier League rival player in Kante but can justify paying £35 million for a young Swiss player who has played two seasons in the Bundesliga. Wenger is too occupied on the belief of the next Henry coming through or the next Fabregas, even if he does find such a gem you can guarantee that Arsenal will not hold onto them into their prime as it's the Arsenal way to sell before a player reaches their peak.
All other outgoings being nothing more than loans, all young men who won't be making a first team appearance any time soon. I can't see Sanchez staying past the summer, he's beginning to see a lack of drive from the club that matches his own and I can see, yet again, a direct Premier League rival coming in taking the Chilean from them. Their title hopes are over, Arsenal will begin their February free fall and ultimately finish 4th maybe for once even 5th with City currently hanging on their coat tails!

Liverpool

Incomings, zero, which from a team that plays Klopp's high intensity style is a tad strange, especially the signs of burnout have been evident since before this window opened. Couple that with the fact that he knew all along Mane would not be with them for a period of time. These top teams baffle at times, what lower clubs would do to have their riches and pull of dominance to sign near enough any player of their choosing. I think Liverpool's shortcomings in the window is more down to arrogance than not being able to bring in the calibre of player needed.

Their main outgoing being that of Sakho on loan to Crystal Palace, which is fine for him but not Liverpool, as shown away at Hull, Lucas playing Centre Back. This is a player who's been on the fringes of leaving the club for 3 seasons but finds himself playing at the heart of a defence that has a International midfielder renowned for his right foot deliveries playing Left Back, There's your first signing; a Left Back and Centre Back but the arrogance of claiming this is now his squad in summer has stunted Klopp from testing Southampton's  reserve on Virjl Van Djik a player who would be a monstrous partner to Joel Matip for Liverpool. This summer will be a busy one, that is, if Klopp can survive 14 more games as the manager at Liverpool.

Manchester City

Pep has gone from saying in the summer his team is 5 signings short of where he wants them to be to claiming he's more than happy with the squad. Again Wing Backs seem to be the issue with the blue side of Manchester but yet again stubbornness plays a key in the lack of signings here I feel. The only incoming you can say is Gabriel Jesus but he was all paid for and dealt with in the summer. He's already been given his chances and this seems to be a signing for the next few seasons. You can see the beginnings of a new era in Manchester City's attack with Sterling, Jesus and Sane leading the line, one I'll be looking forward to seeing develop over the coming seasons.
Again with this teams outgoings, all of them being younger players who they feel need to earn their badges and gain experience else where from the club and it needs to happen soon that a Manchester City youth prospect breaks through to the team or their massive overhaul 6 years ago will be seen as the burning of their own money, an underwhelming transfer window from one of the richest clubs in our country.
